Product Designer / User Experience Designer

SCROLL DOWN

Andrew Doherty

Product Designer / User Experience Designer

I'm a big picture thinker, I tell stories, and I solve problems that affect billions of people. I do this by designing and creating products that matter.

For the last year and a bit, I've been working at Google in Mountain View California, leading design on a new product. Unfortunately I can't share any details, mocks, or screenshots with you yet. But when it launches, I'm pretty sure it will change all of our lives.

In the meantime, please enjoy my portfolio which is filled with a bunch of work that I completed prior to working at Google. In other words, as you scroll down, you're going back in time :)

I research & access knowledge

Extracting knowledge from experts

I research & access knowledge

Extracting knowledge from experts

I conduct team workshops and research sessions with internal and external stakeholders.

I play with lego, I use creative mediums and fun exercises to extract knowledge out of the brains of session participants. I use these key insights in conjunction with metrics and data (quantitative and qualitative) to make informed decisions about potential user experience, interface and interaction solutions.

An example exercise in cognitive stimulation

In the images above, you can see a cognitive stimulation workshop where I requested that executives of a global bank help me understand a day in the life of their customers. First I posed a few problems and questions, and with these in mind, participants were then asked to quietly play with lego for a few minutes and sort their lego blocks into colour order while relaxing ambient music played in the background.

After a few minutes, I then asked participants to put their lego blocks together and build a house.

Why lego? Why this meaningless task?

FMRI studies have been conducted to show conclusively that when people complete repetitive tasks, their brains switch over into their subconscious (The same part of the brain that runs while you're brushing your teeth). The subconscious brain is very powerful when it comes to creative output.

By framing a problem, and then asking session participants to switch over into a mindless task, I'm trying to gently nudge them into accessing their creativity. Solutions to the problems present themselves, as if by magic. I then capture these creative ideas and began card sorting and various other exercises to distil the creative output down into core concepts that directly influence prototypes.

I create precise documentation

Beautiful, accurate and delightful documents can help illustrate user journeys, process flows and research outcomes

I create precise documentation

Beautiful, accurate and delightful documents can help illustrate user journeys, process flows and research outcomes

It is often the case that once a precise and attractive document can be visualised, barriers to resolution begin to dissolve.

Complex problems become easier to understand and solutions present themselves.

I create prototypes, test & iterate

I create prototypes, test & iterate

I prototype rapidly in HTML / CSS / JS

I prototype interactive and responsive interface solutions in html / css / js.  I also use physical paper, Sketch, Photoshop, and Illustrator for static prototypes. I test these design solutions with users and stakeholders to find out what works, and what needs to change. I iterate this process until it's time to finalise the design interaction.

In this stage of a project, I work as a translator who speaks the different languages of developers, engineers, business stakeholders and customers to ensure that everyone understands each other. It is very important to be able to work productively within a team environment, to make certain that we all understand why we are doing what we do. Without this trust and understanding, my best ideas amount to nothing.

I design delightful and beautiful digital products

Usable and useful products can be beautiful too

Usable and useful products can be beautiful too

I design responsive / adaptive interface solutions and interactions in photoshop, or where possible in html / css / js.
I believe good design should anticipate, engage and delight users for the right reasons, and be invisible at all other times.

NBN Co wanted to improve the way their customers could order NBN fibre products through the service portal. My job was to apply a user centred design approach to new designs in an agile and iterative fast paced program.

Clients

I have had the great pleasure to work with many amazing organisations, from global corporations like Google, to very small businesses.

It's easy to say yes to a job, but success for me is intrinsically linked with delivery. I work very hard to ensure that my products and designs are technically feasible and that they add value to customers lives, as well as to business revenue.
The products we make should matter enough to be launched, or we shouldn't make them.
